Getting started: your first map in ten minutes
Sign up, create your first departments and people, and see your stakeholder map take shape — the whole thing takes about ten minutes.
Getting started
OrgBearings is deliberately bottom-up. You do not need an org chart, an HR export or anyone's permission — just the names of the people you actually work with.
1. Sign up
Create an account with email and password. You start on the Free plan: 25 people, 5 departments and 2 projects — more than enough to map your immediate ecosystem.
2. Create your first departments
Open Directory and add the departments you deal with — not the official org chart, the real one. "InfoSec", "Platform Engineering", "Procurement — indirect". Each department can carry a remit ("what they actually control") and SLA notes ("needs 5 working days' notice for firewall changes"). Departments nest, so "InfoSec → Network approvals" works too.
3. Add people as you meet them
Press N anywhere in the app to open Quick Capture. Name, department, job title and — most importantly — their actual remit: "only person who understands the legacy feed" is worth more than any job title. Adding a person takes under 15 seconds, so you can do it live in meetings.
Tag each person's relationship to you: direct teammate, stakeholder, approver, SME/unblocker or external vendor. That tag is what powers search and the Orientation briefing later.
4. Find anyone instantly
Hit Cmd+K (or /) and type what you need — "firewall", "payroll", "SITS". The command bar answers who does that, which department they sit in, whether they are in today, and which projects they touch.
5. Next steps
- Add a project and log its blockers with named resolvers
- Record working patterns and leave so deadlines stop landing on empty chairs (Pro Navigator and Squad)
- Invite your squad to a Team Account so the map becomes shared memory
